A Unipol delegation led by Chairman Mazzoli undertakes a trip to China in late November. The strategic intention is to verify the possibility of being amongst the first to enter a new market that at the time was beginning to open up to the rest of the world. This could only be done with a strong local partner. After a first contact with some British Insurers (representatives of Carlingford and Gibbs, and the HSBC banking group) in Hong Kong, in order to have a first overview of the insurance business in the large Asian country, the Company Ping An based in Shenzhen, the Pacif Insurance Company based in Shanghai and the state Company, PICC (People’s Insurance Company of China) in Beijing are visited. There is also a contact with representatives of the People’s Bank of China, the state bank, which is the body appointed to supervise the insurance business. The trip will lead to open a Unipol representative office in Beijing in 1995.
