Giacomo Leopardi, Canti “Musicali accordi e sovrumani silenzi” (Musical arrangements and superhuman silences): the new event by Fondazione Musica Insieme with the support of the Unipol Group

“Music, even the least expressive, even the simplest, produces, at once, some recreation in the mind, it elevates or touches it, according to the relative dispositions either of the mind or the music, it immerses the listener in a hazy abyss of countless, indefinite sensations”. This is the definition of music in the words of one of the greatest poets, Giacomo Leopardi, celebrated – with the support of the Unipol Group – by the new musical event of Fondazione Musica Insieme. The festival will start on 18 October and includes 4 events (18 and 25 October, 10 and 24 November): it will be focused on the full reading of his most important poetry collection, the Canti, the thirty-six poems written over the span of his lifetime. The reading – entrusted to Giuseppe Cederna, one of the most accomplished film and theatre actors of our times – will be accompanied by the music of Franz Schubert, in turn a pillar of European cultural history. Once again, the performance will be staged at the Unipol Auditorium in Via Stalingrado, which also hosted the two previous editions: “Baudelaire: I fiori del male (Baudelaire: The Flowers of Evil)” (2014) and “Vorrei essere scrittore di musica: Pier Paolo Pasolini, poeta dei suoni (I want to be a writer of music: Pier Paolo Pasolini, a poet of sounds)” (2015), met by huge public success.

The Canti, written between 1818 and 1836, include poetry spanning from his youth to his tormented maturity, following him from Recanati to Florence, Milan, Pisa, Bologna and Naples, where he finally passed away. The integral reading of what is arguably one of the most significant collections of poetry makes it possible to come closer to the noble spirit of the author, attracted by the charm of the sublime while constantly grounded by a more anguished pessimism. The obvious choice of musical accompaniment was Franz Schubert, already united by his biography: born one year apart, in 1798 and 1797 respectively, they were both child prodigies imprisoned in a provincial context that stifled their yearning for greatness, before meeting an early death that did not prevent them from leaving a prolific mark, an essential testament for future generations.
