Unipol embraces a new Group dimension, opening the Life business with Unipol Vita and consolidating its proximity to citizens and workers with new local agreements.
New Chairman for the Agents Group
At the end of September, the second meeting of the Agents Group is held in Maiori (Salerno). Towards the end of the year, Ivo Lotti, Rimini agent takes over from Preti as Chairman of GAAU Corporate Agents Group of Unipol. In 1969, the Pension Fund of Unipol Agents also becomes operational.
Change in officers at the top of Unipol
On 30 June, the new Board of Directors appoints Michele Brunetti as Chairman, Cinzio Zambelli as Deputy Chairman and confirms Sergio Getici as General Manager.
Unipol signs agreements with CNA and ANVAD
On 26 May, Unipol signs an agreement with the National handicraft confederation (CNA), while on 3 November it signs one with the National Association of street vendors and retailers (ANVAD).
Unipol Vita starts operations
Unipol Vita obtains the authorization to provide Life insurance coverage. Thus, the activities of Unipol Vita begin and there is talk of a “Unipol Group”.
First computer is purchased
In 1969, after equipping itself with a small software development department, the DPC of Unipol acquires and installs a computer with the relevant peripherals to handle all issues in complete autonomy.
1968
Time for innovation and investment. The computerization process of files and advertising in sports contexts begins.
1st Congress of the Agents Group
In early May at the Grand Hotel in Rimini, the first congress of the corporate agents Group of Unipol is held with the election of corporate officers.
The way they worked: DPC
The DPC (Data Processing Center) of Unipol works with punch-card machines. The job consists in entering data into special machines that return punch-cards.
Unipol for Belice
On the occasion of the earthquake of Belice in Sicily, through the National League of Cooperatives, Unipol delivers ITL 1m in favor of the earthquake victims.
Advertising agreements
Unipol reaches a three-year agreement (for ITL 10m) with the Imola Racing Track to set up billboards on the grandstand at the World Cycling Championships. In the same year Unipol also sponsors a baseball team that plays in Serie B (second division).
The Data Processing Center is created
The CED (Centro Elaborazione Dati, Data Processing Center) of Unipol becomes operational in early 1968.
1967
The growth in size of local agencies and market share continues, with an expansion of business segments. In the same year, the first Agents Group is established.
Agreement with the ARCI
Unipol reaches an agreement with ARCI to provide “leisure” insurance coverage to all its members.
The cosmonaut Tereskova visits Unipol
On 10 September 1967, the Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereskova makes a visit to Unipol.
The policy of “Peace”
Unipol enters into a policy of “peace” to ensure the transport of medicines that the Bologna City Council gathers for the populations affected by the conflict in the Middle East (“Six-Day War”).
The Unipol Agents Group is established
On May 6, at the headquarters in Via Oberdan in Bologna, forty agents meet to establish the Unipol Agents Group. The meeting ends with the appointment of a provisional coordination group and the preparation of a draft of the Bylaws.
New agencies
The Executive Committee of 17 April approves the establishment of new agencies in Palermo, Casale Monferrato, Monza, Ancona general, Trieste, Mestre, Naples special, and Turin Rolando.

Enhancement of local presence through support to local cooperatives and local communities affected by flooding.
Unipol in favor of flood victims in Florence
Ten days after the flood in Florence, Unipol provides ITL 1m to the solidarity fund in favor of flood victims as an immediate contribution to the agencies damaged by the flood.
Unipol invests in mechanization
The Company’s sudden growth in size requires the technological reorganization of a number of accounting and management procedures. This technological innovation is also functional to contain operating costs and to make the control of local activities more efficient.
Unipol and Italian Hail Agreement
Unipol adheres to the Italian Hail Agreement, a free association of insurance Companies involved in underwriting risk in the extremely hazardous sector of hail.
1965
Phase of agreements with national associations and trade unions: a season of strong market and economic expansion starts.
Unipol grows bigger and moves to southern Italy
Gradually, the Unipol brand begins to expand in our Country.
Unipol changes its registered office
The Company has the need to acquire larger and more dignified corporate headquarters. On 29 November, the Board chooses the historic “Palazzo del Cane” in Via Oberdan 24, as a property suitable for the Company’s growing needs.
Reinsurance Treaties
Unipol signs reinsurance treaties with the following companies: Gerling-Konzern, Ingosstrakh, Adas, Bulstrad, SOVAG, Allami Birtosito, Garant, and Minet.
Unipol signs the first agreement with CGIL
The Company signs an agreement with CGIL and provides insurance coverage at particularly advantageous conditions to all trade union members and their families.
Unipol triplicates its premium income
The General Meeting of Shareholders held in Ravenna on 24 June approves the 1964 financial statements. Compared to 1963, the Company triplicates its gross premium income amounting to ITL 901m, the loss ratio for Unipol in MV-TPL business is 81.27% against the national average of 109%.

The Unipol sales network grows
In 1964, six general agencies are opened: two in Lombardy, one in Emilia Romagna, one in Tuscany, one in Umbria and one in Basilicata.
Unipol adjusts rates by ANIA
With regard to the pricing of the various risks Unipol decides to adapt its rates to those of ANIA.
First Annual General Meeting for the approval of the financial statements
On 30 June the Extraordinary General Meeting and the Ordinary General Meeting are held.
The way they worked: Early policies
Since the beginning of 1963 and until the end of the ‘60s, there were two standard policies in the motor insurance business: MV-TPL and Global MV-TPL.
1963
Official establishment of Unipol as a corporate entity and start of business activities.
The Company starts with 31 employees
Unipol starts business with 31 people as employed workers. In this early period, training is mainly intended as operational training and is provided by more experienced employees coaching the newly hired staff.
First Unipol agencies
On 23 September 1963, the agency Assicoop is established in Reggio Emilia. In late 1963, there are already sixteen general agencies which constitute the Company’s primary sales network. One in Piedmont, two in Lombardy, nine in Emilia Romagna, three in Tuscany and one in Lazio.
First Board of Directors and Opening Ceremony of the Headquarters
The first Board of Directors is held and Mr. Oscar Gaeta is appointed as Chairman and Mr. Michele Brunetti as Deputy Chairman. Mr. Sergio Getici is appointed as General Manager, Mr. Bruno Marazzi as Deputy General Manager.
First General Meeting of Unipol
The annual General Meeting of shareholders is held on 25 March. The first Board of Directors is elected.
From Turin to Bologna
On 28 January, the Extraordinary General Meeting of shareholders decides to transfer its registered office from Turin to Bologna.
1962
Compagnia Assicuratrice Unipol is sold to Federcoop and to a group of cooperatives of Bologna and Emilia.
Unipol obtains the authorization for non-life business
Unipol is authorized to provide “Non-Life” insurance coverage.
The Cooperatives acquire Unipol
On 5 November at the Provincial Federation of Cooperatives of Bologna the decision is ratified to acquire a company, called Unipol.
UNIPOL is born around a table
“Good, really good chicken fricassee”. It was August ‘62 and in Vallombrosa six men sat around a beautifully set table rich with food. The main dish, chicken fricassee. They started eating and discussing. Despite the hot summer air and the holiday climate, that was a working lunch.
1961
The insurance company Unipol is founded by the will of the automaker Lancia.
Capital increase
On 14 February a capital increase is subscribed for. The share capital increases to ITL 250,000,000.
Unipol is established
On 25 January, a joint-stock company called Compagnia Assicuratrice Unipol Società per Azioni is incorporated at the office of the notary public Remo Morone in Turin. The share capital is ITL 1,000,000 divided into one thousand shares of ITL 1,000 each.
